August 1st We made a quick trip to Antibes to takes Maurice's grandchildren to a friends. It is a great city in a beautiful setting and, as usual, the old city full of narrow, interesting streets was wonderful to walk around. I found a great English bookstore as well. Just wish it were nearer. The old fort which guards the harbor. Oleander grows everywhere. I think the colors of this church are terrific. View of the bay. View of fort through parasol pines.
August 17th One day I had a little time and made a quick trip to a small village near us on top of a hill called Grambois. From the road below I can see this very high wall with an arched window in it but I had never seen it in the village itself so decided to see if I could find it. Grambois is a very small place with the usual church and part of a chateau and full of really nicely done homes. This is the main courtyard of Grambois. I'd love to live here with that round tower. Very old painting in the church-the date of 1512 was on the bottom. Also in the church-I wonder who this guy with the golden hair was. Mary with braids. Bell tower of the church-the top is open so the mistral won't blow it right off the top. Here is the arched window I see from the road. I think it was part of a chateau.
August 25th One hot day I made a short trip to some nearby villages that I have since I have lived here. One was Cabriere d'Aigues. Somewhere there is a carving left from Roman times showing the transport of wine on a river boat pulled by men. I looked for it in vain and never found it. I did find these cute sunflowers. An interesting dove cote, I believe, on top of a house. I love the vide greniers both in Paris and at small villages around Provence. This Sunday I went over the mountain into Haute Provence to a small village called Viens. I really like the village which is full of small, pedestrian only, streets, not because of shopping but because it is left that way from ancient times. The occupants had their tables set up with what we could call flea market bargains in the States. Vide greniers means to empty the attic. Interesting arch in a wall of Viens. Entrance to cemetery of nearby village of Oppede.
